On May 31 Salem will play host to, according to organizers, the first health and wellness fair that is not run by a big corporation.

"It's done all with community support," organizer Michelle Fenney said.

The fair will be held on May 31 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Center.

"The fair will focus on developing healthier lifestyles," Fenney said. "We are in a health crises with our children and ourselves. The doctors have said children born in the last 10 years will not live past 65 if this continues with poor health practices."

Mayor Janet Taylor will speak at 11:30 a.m. Other events include speakers, cooking classes, exercise and massage demonstrations and business and professional presentations designed to help adults and families make better health choices.

The event is sponsored by Focus, which stands for Fearless Overall Change Utilizing Support.

"Our purpose is to help the community learn and have resources to promote health and wellness for adults and families," Fenney said.

The Scottish Rite Center is located at 4090 Commercial St. For information call (503) 602-1808.
