Review: Soup Cellar

It was a typical rainy Oregon day, and hot soup and a good read were in order. Book in hand, I went to check out the new location of the Soup Cellar, which used to be housed downstairs in the Reed Opera House. I found it in a new strip mall between North Liberty Road and Front Street. The building is open and bright, with fish-themed pottery among the décor. I was seated immediately and given a copy of their extensive menu. It included several hot and cold sandwiches, wraps, hummus, smoothies, bubble teas and, to my surprise, Filipino cuisine.

They feature three soups each day, which are listed on the wall.  I ordered butternut squash soup, the Tuscan chicken sandwich and a chocolate strawberry smoothie. I didn't have much time to read before my food came. My grilled sandwich was flavorful with sun-dried tomato hummus spread, sliced chicken, lettuce, onion and pepperjack cheese; however, the hummus made the inside of the bread a bit soggy. The soup was satisfying, but I expected more squash flavor and it seemed a little thin. My smoothie was made with ice cream and real fruit, but I was a bit disappointed that they did not have espresso on this cold, gray day.

The staff was very friendly and came by later with samples of tomato jam, which tasted like apple butter.

I missed the cozy, unique feel that the Reed Opera House offered, but the food will be enjoyed by those who find the Soup Cellar at its new location.
