Not only were the insides of Chemeketa Community College's Building 50 standing room only, but a large crowd of people packed the sidewalk and surrounded a speaker on the wall to listen to charismatic Bill Clinton speak today.Clinton, a self-proclaimed "rural hitman," was in Oregon to support Hillary Clinton's campaign and the speech he gave was always centered around his candidate. He spoke on four reasons why Hillary Clinton would be the best president out of the candidates and weaved in stories of how she has been preparing for that role her whole adult life.
The first reason was that she has the "best economic plan." He pointed out that she is ready to lead by bringing jobs back to the rate that they were during his presidency. The numbers he mentioned were 22.7 million jobs created during his presidency to "around 5 million new jobs" in the current administration. He focused mainly on what he called "green collar jobs" and the creation of a mass marketed 100mpg American-made car that would bring those jobs into rural areas.
He also said that Senator Clinton is the "best qualified." He listed her achievements as creating the first rural development bank in Arkansas, her work with the Children's Defense Fund, and expanding children's healthcare.
The third reason touted was that she is the best "change agent" for the country. He spoke on her dedication to the causes she chose to follow, such as the Children's Defense Fund and laws preventing child abuse that are now widely adopted at the state level.
Finally Clinton believes that his wife will remember the individual people she met on the campaign trail and not get lost in the "bubble" of the presidency. In other words, she's ready and willing to stay on the tasks that her campaign has been promoting.
He spoke on health care and covered Senator Clinton's plan for a revision to the health care system to give every American the ability to buy into health coverage similar to the Congressional health plan. He quoted statistics that show that insurance companies spend 30 percent of their revenue on paperwork compared to the government-
run Medicare's 3 percent.
Regarding education, he guaranteed that under a Clinton presidency, every young adult would be entitled to 2 years of continuing education by increased tax credits. Another point was that public service as a firefighter, EMT, and other careers could help pay back the loan.
Foreign policy was brought up briefly and included an unintelligible heckle from the crowd to which President Clinton responded, "You want to get up here and give this speech? You've been interrupting me all along." The crowd went wild inside and outside of the building.
Clinton pointed out that many military officials have endorsed Hillary Clinton, including Jack Murtha and former members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He made it a point that the Geneva Convention would be followed under a Clinton presidency and that military use would be used as a last resort.
There were only a couple jabs at Clinton's opponent, Senator Barack Obama, mentioning that some people are "great speakers" and there are those who can perform the job.
Clinton took no questions, but did spend extra time with the crowds outside. Hands were shook, books were autographed, and babies were kissed.
