It's been only a couple months since Nine Inch Nails released their first album for free on the Internet. That album contained nine songs with the full 36 tracks costing only $5. This time around NIN has released ten tracks of their new album called "the slip." Why would they do it again so quickly? The NIN Web site gives this reason: "as a thank you to our fans for your continued support, we are giving away the new nine inch nails album one hundred percent free, exclusively via nin.com.""the slip" has 10 tracks with a total length of 43:45. NIN is licensing the content under a Creative Commons license that allows you to share it with anyone as long as it's not for your own financial gain. As the nin.com site says "We encourage you to remix it, share it with your friends, post it on your blog, play it on your podcast, give it to strangers, etc."
Trent Reznor has spoken out against high prices on albums in the past. At a concert in Australia, Reznor was publicized as saying:
"Well you know what that means. Steal it. Steal away. Steal, steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealing. Because one way or another these mother fuckers will get it through their head that they're ripping people off and that's not right." This quote was taken from the live performance in September of 2007. Looking forward, his band has now released 20 tracks for free and another 26 for $5. Whether this is a slap in the face of NIN's record company Universal or just a surplus of tracks ready to go prior to a bigger album release, one thing is sure, fans are getting the best part of the deal.
