Sitting beneath a palm tree, I sip a Kona latte while gazing at a waterfall. Lazy Hawaiian music plays in the background.

No ... I'm not on vacation in a tropical paradise. I'm at Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii in Salem.

This unique little shop is one of five that are in operation in Oregon right now. It offers a selection of Kona coffees, a breakfast and lunch menu and merchandise such as T-shirts, golf balls and flavored cigars. The Bad Ass Coffee chain is part of a growing trend to put a new spin on the traditional coffeehouse atmosphere.

Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, this franchise started in Hawaii and has grown to over 45 stores throughout North America.

The name comes from the native people of Kona, Hawaii, who remember hearing the sounds of bellowing donkeys as they hauled heavy loads of coffee up and down the mountainside.

Salem store owners Tracy Hayes and Kate Webb are excited to introduce this venue to Salem.

"We have not only wonderful coffee, but also an Aloha atmosphere which is different than the coffeeshops we have right now," Hayes said.
Mahalo nui loa, ladies! And pomaika`i.

Me? I'm going to find a hammock and a ukelele and continue my imaginary tropical getaway.
