Idoltude: American Idol's David Cook shines

Tonight the Idols sang songs from the year they were born, which for most of us at Idoltude translated into memories of junior high and high school. Not surprisingly the contestants didn't really know what to do with these "oldies." Had it not been for David Cook, the entire evening would have been a bust. Here's how the show broke down:

Ramiele Malubay ("Alone" by Heart) Ramiele sang like a spoiled child at a talent show who knew she was going to lose so she sang louder just to spite the audience. Here's hoping that Ramiele suffers from The Curse of the First and gets voted off not only because she sucks, but because she's NOT CUTE ANYMORE.

Jason Castro ("Fragile" by Sting) There is a line between finding something you are good at and sticking with it and becoming boring. Jason is getting dangerously close to boring. Simon accused him of not taking the competition seriously. But for being high all the time, I think he's pulling off serious pretty well.

Syesha Mercado ("If I Were Your Woman" by Stephanie Mills) Good performance ... for once. After falling flat week after week Syesha (sort of) redeemed herself tonight.

Chikezie ("If Only For One Night" by Luther Vandross) In a throw back to his orange-suit, Chikezie took the audience back to his Chi-Cheesy roots, reminding us why we used to hate him. It's hard to believe he's the same fellow who blew us away during Beatles week.

Brooke White ("Every Breath You Take" by The Police) Is Brooke White showing us her true colors? Could it be that the girl who claims never to have seen an R-rated movie is really a psycho-bitch stalker? Oh, if only. Unfortunately, her uninspired version of one of the creepiest songs ever made sounded more like a casino performance.

Michael Johns (Queen medley of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions") The judges said this was Michael's best night. I agree, but it held a certain element of desperation. He knows he can't win the competition, but he wants to get as many good performances in as he can before he is voted off. Relax, Michael. With the likes of Ramiele, Syesha and Kristy still in the competition, you'll get your licks in.

Carly Smithson ("Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler) As creepy as Carly is, she gets points for having a MILF. The other interesting thing that we found out about Carly tonight is that she once had a huge, blond afro. Whoa. What happened? Bring it back, Carly. Bring it back! That might be just the boost you need to win back America's heart.

David Archuleta ("You're The Voice" by David Foster) This boy has found his calling, and sadly it's at Jesus Camp. David's preachy song choices coupled with his youthful righteousness are a match made in heaven. Churches everywhere will be beating down his door.

Kristy Lee Cook ("God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood) In a desperate attempt to stay on the show, Kristy sang the corniest, most patriotic song she could find. And it worked. The judges loved it - but even if they hadn't they couldn't exactly trash this good ol' boy country tune. That would have been un-American. I may have underestimated Kristy's intelligence.

VoteForTheWorst.com has decided that she is worthy of their attention, so it looks like we will have extra helpings of Kristy over the next few weeks. Check out their coverage of her with fellow train wreck Britney Spears: Kristy Lee Cook is Only a Train Wreck Because of Her Mentor

David Cook ("Billy Jean" by Michael Jackson) This performance was the highlight of the night. David took Chris Cornell (of Audioslave and Soundgarden)'s version of "Billy Jean" and proved that he is the frontrunner in this competition. And I don't care what anyone says, I think his hair is cool.

My pick for elimination tomorrow? Definitely Ramiele.

Cook is the real deal (#1)

In my opinion, this is a two horse race.  David C., and David A.  Nobody else is even remotely close.  David Cook is going to be huge.  His talent is immense, and his taste in music is the icing on the cake.  Great song choices, performed flawlessly, week after week.  David Archuletta is
an incredibly talented, charismatic vocalist, and may have locked up the crown already, if not for the forgotten lyrics gaffe, and a couple poor song choices.  I actually liked his song choice and performance last night, but he doesn't stand a chance against the steamroller that David C. has become.
