Last week's performances were bad, yet somehow this week was even worse on American Idol. At least last week's show featured a couple really good performances to offset the not-so-good. But this week no one particularly stood out among the less-than-fab performances of America's favorite boy band. Here's my take on tonight's show:
Amanda Overmyer: ("Back in the USSR") Our former Hot Nurse stepped up and gave a pretty decent performance, all things considered. At her worse, Amanda's voice is like fingernails on a cheese grater. At her best she's slightly tolerable. Tonight was somewhere in between. On the upside, she showed that - wow! - she actually has a personality somewhere in there.
Kristy Lee Cook: ("You've Got To Hide Your Love Away") I've spent the last few weeks lamenting this girl's singing and wondering what we'd done to god to make him punish us so. Tonight it all became clear when she reminded Simon that she could "blow him out of his socks." Aha! THAT must be what she's been doing while the other contestants have been practicing their songs. Now that I know her dirty little secret I won't be surprised to see her make it to the Top Three.
David Archuleta: ("The Long and Winding Road") Little David scraped by on his cuteness and charm last week after butchering his song and forgetting the lyrics. This week he was much better. Viva David!
Michael Johns: ("A Day in the Life") I will say this at least a couple more times throughout this column. Please, people learn the meaning of the words of your song. If you don't you will surely find yourself singing the wrong intonations at the wrong time, or worse, making a rendition of a song in which the lyrics just don't make any sense, ala Mr. Johns' version of "A Day in the Life."
Brook White: ("Here Comes the Sun") Little Miss Goodie Two Shoes is back, this time without the help of an instrument. It didn't go well. The whole performance was awkward. It felt like a child had dressed up in Mommy's clothing and was performing for the family in the living room. Sure it's cute if it's your kid, but in Brook's case it was just plain uncomfortable. Maybe she should ask Kristy for some tips ...
David Cook: ("Day Tripper") Simon told David that he is growing predictable. But I'll take his predictable over the other load of crap that we heard tonight.
Carly Smithson: ("Blackbird") So Simon tells her she is self-indulgent and then she confirms it by describing the self-indulgent reason why she picked the song. And she's STILL creepy looking. No more close-up shots of her face, please.
Jason Castro: ("Michelle") Again: Learn the meaning of your song! It was so obvious that Jason did not bother to translate the French lyrics in "Michelle," which killed his performance. C'mon, Jason, cute will only get you so far.
Syesha Mercado: ("Yesterday") And yet again: Learn the meaning of your song! "Yesterday," if you listen carefully, is a song of hope -- "I believe in yesterday." Syesha completely missed the boat and made it into a sad, mournful tune. But at least the stage didn't swallow her up like it usually does.
Chikezie: ("I've Just Seen a Face") Maybe not your best performance (it was a little out there), but you've come a long way from the orange suit, baby. I'll take it.
Ramiele Malubay ("I Should Have Known Better") Uhhh ... David Hernandez called. He wants his crappy performance back. Ramiele needs to 1) Learn how to walk in heels; and 2) Stop trying to be so cute. What is it with this season's contestants and their cute factor? It has definitely worn out its welcome, especially with Ramiele.
This week Ramiele is my pick to be sent home. She's about as bad as Kristy Lee Cook, but all things being equal, she hasn't publicly offered Simon sexual favors, so her time on the show is limited. See ya, shorty.
