Tonight American Idols took on Rock `n Roll Hall of Famers. My feeling going in was that this would be a chance for David Cook and possibly Jason Castro to shine; inexplicably it went the exact opposite direction. Here's a break down:
David Cook ("Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran and "Baba O'Reilly" by The Who)
Tonight should have been a slam dunk for David Cook. His first song was correctly characterized by Simon as too much like the original. The second started out with a super-intense, dramatic opening, but as soon as the song started to build, it was suddenly over. Hey, David, don't give us musical foreplay if you're not going to close the deal!
Syesha Mercado ("Proud Mary" by Tina Turner and "A Change is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke) Syesha, apparently channeling Brooke White, broke down in tears tonight on stage upon rave reviews from - Paula? Since when did she give anything but rave reviews? Syesha's lame reason for the tears was that she researched "A Change is Gonna Come" and found out that Cooke wrote it during the civil rights movement, but now it means so much more to her because of where she is in the competition. Wow, Syesha. Let's just ignore the impact that it had on the civil rights movement and not mention the fact that America is on the cusp of having its first-ever African American president and let's just focus on YOU and YOUR place in this insignificant, mindless competition. Thank you for dumbing down what should have been a meaningful song.
Jason Castro ("I Shot the Sheriff" by Bob Marley and "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan) In an oh-so-predictable move Jason Castro chose songs by two of the biggest stoners of all time. Dude, you rock, Jason. The thing is, Jason is not hateable like Brooke and Carly were. He's just kind of a cool guy who sometimes sings well and sometimes doesn't, but either way doesn't seem to give a flying crap. More power to him. He has also been picked up by VoteForTheWorst.com, so don't be surprised if he sails through to the next round despite tonight's horrid performances.
David Archuleta ("Stand By Me" by Ben E. King and "Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley) Little David was declared the winner in tonight's show, but that's like declaring Hillary the winner of Indiana. Even if it's true, it really doesn't mean anything. Tonight's competition was nil. Little David was good as usual but not great and his song choices were booorrrrinng. "Stand By Me" AND "Love Me Tender"? Seriously? This just went from snoozefest to gagfest.
I'm guessing we'll see Syesha or Jason in the hot seat tomorrow and it's a toss-up which one of them goes home, especially when you factor in the votes of the Worsters.
